Ancient Greek Gods

According to Greek mythology, there are many ancient Greek gods and each had their own task and own immortal lives to tell about. The Greeks believed that the world began with Chaos, a dark abyss with nothing in it. Chaos created Earth (also known as Mother Earth, Gaea, or Gaia). Earth gave birth, alone, to the Sky (also known as Uranus, or Ouranos, or Heavens), and to Ourea (mountains, and Pontus (sea). Uranus became her lover and together they created the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the Hecatonchires. The original twelve Titans who were the children of Uranus and Gaea, were Cronus, Rhea, Phoebe, Thea, Iapetus, Hyperion, Oceanus, Themis, Mnemosyne, Crius, Koios, and Tethys. Of these twelve, there were six males and six females.

Greek Gods and Goddesses

Uranus or Ouranos was the husband of Gaea but he feared the powers of their children so he hid them in the pit of the Underworld called Tartarus. Gaea got very angry and was in pain so she begged her sons to help her castrate Uranus. If he was ashamed of his children, he did not need to father more. Cronus was the son who agreed to help Gaea and he cut off Uranus' testicles with a sickle that Gaea made for him.

Greek Mythology

The Cyclopes were, Brontes, Steropes, and Arges. They were giants with one eye in the middle of their foreheads. They were also strong and violent. Some reports state that Uranus feared his children and were also ashamed of their looks. Cronus freed them after he castrated Uranus but then he began to fear they would take his power as ruler so he cast them back into Tartar and they remained there until Zeus freed them and they helped him destroy Cronus and the Titans who were helping him in the war. Cronus and his followers were then cast into Tartarus.
