Greek History
The History of the Greek can be traced back to the Stone Age. After the Stone Age came the farmers and civilization known as the Minoan and Mycenaean era when there were kings as rulers. After this era came a time of wars and invasions which was known as the Dark Ages. The Dorians invaded and spread down the west coast of Greece around 1100 B.C.. Greece was divided into 2 small states from 500 B.C. to 336 B.C.. Each state had a city and land around it.
There were three major ancient historians known. These historians recorded their time in Greece. These historians were Herodotus, who is also known as the Father of History. Herodotus visited many historic sites at that time. The other two historians known are Thucydides and Xenophon. What we haven’t learned from the historians, we have learned from the ancient pottery, sculptures, artifacts, and architecture found throughout the years.
The different periods of history on record begins with the Neolithic Period which was between 6000 and 29oo B.C.. This era lasted in Greece from 6800 B.C. to 3200 B.C.. The settlements were in the Near East of Greece. The people would travel because of overpopulation. They made pottery also grew animals such as sheep, goats, cattle, pigs, chickens, and other basic farm animals. Their trail seems to go along the Black Sea into Thrace and then into Macedonia, Thessaly, Boeotia, and others. They also moved into Greece from one island to another.
The Bronze Age lasted from 2900 B.C. to 2000 B.C.. This was also known as the Helladic Era which began around 2800 B.C. and lasted until 1050 B.C. in Crete and in the Aegean Islands it began in 3000 B.C.. The Bronze Age is divided into several different periods known as the Helladic !, and Helladic II era. The colonies were made up of 300 to 1000 people. The different eras are determined by the architecture, lifestyles of the people and the different burial styles.
The Minoan Age came next and it lasted from 3000 B.C. and 1000 B.C.. It was divided into three eras. There was the Early Minoan period which was from 3000 B.C. to 2200 B.C.. The Middle Minoan era was from 2200 B.C. and 1500 B.C., and the Late Minoan era was from 1500 B.C. to 1000 B.C..
The Mycenaean Age came next and it was the period from 600 B.C. and 1100 B.C.. This era was the time from which many heros and myths came. There was a lot of gold artifacts discovered here in the kingdom of Mycenae. This age was short lived because after it came the Dark Age. The Dark Age lasted from 1100 B.C. to 750 B.C..
Other Ages after that consisted of the Archaic Age from 750 B.C. to 500 B.C., the Classical Period from 500 B.C. to 336 B.C. and the Hellenistic Period from 336 B.C. to 146 B.C. There is much more history about Greece and it is very interesting to read about.
