Greek Statues
There have been many Greek statues produced throughout the ages. There are not many left which were crafted during the Ancient Greek era but there have been many replicas manufactured over the years and they are, in some cases, very inexpensive. So if you want to decorate your home with Greek gods and goddesses, go for it. There are statues, busts, vases, and urns which depict the ones used in Ancient Greece. There are many stories behind the statues and other artifacts and there is a lot of information online and in library books about what life might have been like back then. Some of the Greek statues can be seen on the following web site: http://www,theoi.com/Galleries.html.
Some of the many statues were of the famous Greek gods and goddesses such as: Zeus god of the Thunder, Sky, other gods and goddesses, Rain, and Clouds), Poseidon (God of the Sea), DemeterGoddess of Corn, Earth, and Harvest), Hera (goddess of Marriage), Apollo (god of Sun, Truth, Music, and Healing), Athena (goddess of City, Education, Science, and War), Ares (god of War), Aphordite (goddess of Love and Beauty), Hermes (god of Commerce and Market, also Zeus’ Messenger), Dionysos (god of Vine, Wine, and Merriment), the Muses , Artemis goddess of Wild Animals, Hunter-In-Chief), Pan (god of Flocks, Sheep), Asklepios (god of Health and Medicine), Herakles, Eros (god of Love), River Gods, Centaurs, Satyrs, and many others, both minor and major gods and goddesses.
The statues, paintings, etc. of the Greek gods and goddesses were often accompanied with their symbols. Zeus was often seen with a thunderbolt, an eagle, and/or an oak. Aphrodite is seen with a sceptre, myrtle, and a dove. Apollo may be seen with a bow, lyre, and laurel. Ares is seen with a spear. Artemis is seen with a bow and a deer. Athena was distinguished by her aegis, owl, and olive tree. Demeter was seen with a sceptre, torch, and corn. Dionysos may be seen with a grapevine, ivy, and thyros. Hephaistos is often seen with an axe. Hera is seen with a peacock, sceptre, and a diadem. Hermes is known for his caduceus and winged boots. Poseidon is known for his trident, horse, and bull.
The Greek gods and goddesses were often identified by their symbols when trying to figure out which sculpture or painting was who. Sometimes they were hard to distinguish between some of them because some of them carried the same weapons or represented the same thing. A good example of this might be the gods and goddesses of the seas or other tasks where there were more than one with the same task or one similar to it. There were many who fought in the wars and used weapons for protection so many of them carried a sceptre or bow and arrows.
